The Hallam Road Facility and the SITA/Minibah Waste Transfer and Recycling Centre have achieved Environmental Management ISO14001 and Occupational Health & Safety AS4801 certifications.
This is testament to the facilities commitment to responsible management of waste products and to minimising the environmental impact of waste.
Since 1997, the SITA/Minibah Waste Transfer and Recycling Centre, located at the Hallam Road Facility, has been responsible for diverting thousands of tonnes of recyclable and hazardous material from landfill.
Furthermore, SITA recently upgraded in the Hallam Road landfill (which possesses a gas capture system operating for many years), the electricity generation capacity with the installation of electricity generators. The system now generates 1.1 MWh of power. This is pumped back into the grid to provide electricity for housing and businesses. A further 1.1 MWh capacity is also due to be installed in early 2008.
The SITA/Minibah Transfer Station diverts from landfill items such as oil, batteries, tyres, metal, paper and cardboard and hundreds of other items through its recycled goods shop located on-site.
The SITA/Minibah Waste Transfer and Recycling Centre is also creating opportunities for more than 30 people with disabilities through its association with Minibah Services Inc – an organisation that “empowers people with disabilities through comprehensive and innovative services”.
The SITA/Minibah Waste Transfer and Recycling Centre is open to the public 7 days a week:
