Quarantine Waste Services

SITA Environmental Solutions provides a comprehensive quarantine waste management service, inclusive of solid and liquid waste collection, treatment and disposal, approved by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS).

AQIS approves treatment providers, as well as waste disposal companies, to undertake the collection, treatment and storage of waste.  Quarantine waste can only be handled by an AQIS approved provider.

What is Quarantine Waste?

Predominately, quarantine waste is:

  • waste collected directly from international vessels (including passenger ships and aircraft);
  • dunnage (scrap timber);
  • waste collected from amnesty bins located within airports or seaports; and
  • product/items seized during quarantine inspections.
Quarantine Waste - Passenger Liner
Quarantine waste can be any product that has come from overseas and is deemed not for use in the marketplace without prior treatment.

The waste is generated by importers of product from overseas, freight forwarders handling clearance of goods for their clients, airlines, shipping companies and passenger liners.

Wash water from the cleaning of heavy vehicles, such as tractors or excavators, prior to despatch to resellers is classified as liquid quarantine waste.  The wash water must be collected by a dedicated vehicle and treated by an approved AQIS method before final disposal.
